2023 UKRAINE APPEAL
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has brought immense suffering and devastation to the people of this nation, and their healthcare system is in a state of crisis. Hospitals are struggling to provide even the most basic medical care due to a severe shortage of essential equipment, consumables, and medicines. The Christian Medical Association of Ukraine (CMAU), a beacon of hope in these dark times, is tirelessly working to provide medical relief to those affected by the conflict.
What we have been able to do so far
We have been richly blessed through your support in being able to respond to this ongoing need. Our appeal has raised over $800,000 from individuals, charities and corporate donors but, far more significantly, we have been able to build strong partnerships over the past 18 months with NHS and private hospitals, suppliers of drugs and consumables, and logistics companies, giving us huge leverage.
The result is that we have been able thus far to send over 130 truck and lorry loads of donated medical equipment, consumables and drugs – worth literally millions of dollars - into Ukraine, which have been distributed to over 300 hospitals, clinics, churches and front-line units all over the country. These include 54 anaesthetic machines, 120 paramedic backpacks and over 30 lorry loads of hospital beds and mattresses.
Suppliers have been beating a path to our door to work with us and our work has been acknowledged in the UK parliament, welcomed by the Ukraine government and honoured by the receipt of a Logistics Industry Leadership Award for 2023.
The ongoing need
We are continuing to send up to four lorry loads per month, but we are now out of funds to continue the work. Might you help us to continue? As most of the supplies we send are donated, we normally pay only £2,000 costs per lorry (up to 52 pallets) and a £300 handling charge per pallet of drugs, so any gift you can make will have a huge impact. In addition, we have been offered 50 Emergency Health Packs at £500 each by one of our suppliers (each containing over £2,000 worth of drugs for frontline clinical use).
As Christians and healthcare professionals, we have been blessed with the skills, knowledge, and resources to bring healing and comfort to those who are suffering. It is our calling to extend our hands to the wounded and sick, to be instruments of God’s love and mercy.
